The 2018 Smart Fortwo is a segment A car built in 1998 by Smart, a joint venture between the Swiss watch factory Swatch and the German Mercedes-Benz company. Initially Smart was the name of the model and not of the brand, which was instead known with the acronym of MCC (Micro Compact Car) like Mercedes-Benz MCC. But since 2002, Smart has become a real brand, and the model has taken the name of City-Coupe (or City Cabrio, depending on the type of roof); finally, starting from 2004, the name was changed to Fortwo, when the range of Smart was extended with the first generation of the Forfour.
Among the other innovations introduced with the launch of the Smart Fortwo, which allows a high level of passive safety compared to the dimensions of the car and which is made of a very resistant steel alloy, must be mentioned. However, the first series of Smart Fortwo represented a significant loss for Mercedes-Benz, following a sale price that was too low compared to production costs.
At the Paris Motor Show 2016, the electric version of the third generation was presented. This electric motor has been available since 2017 in the 2018 Fortwo, in the Fortwo convertible, and for the first time, in the Forfour. The Smart ED can be recognized by white lettering on the front and back, as well as the ED plug logo. In the special model Greenflash, the Tridion cell and the exterior mirrors are painted in electric green. The tachometer from the combustion engines was replaced by a power meter for the recalled power.

At its debut, the Smart was a real innovation in the field of super-utility vehicles, thanks to its extremely reduced dimensions that allowed it to move easily in the most intense urban traffic and to park in very limited spaces. This, combined with small and modern engines with low operating costs, has decreed the success of the small German car with Swiss DNA, despite the not very popular price (between 17 and 20 million lire in 1998).
2018 Smart Fortwo Engine
Today, the model is offered with the same engine as at the introduction with various trim levels of between 50 and 71 horsepower, as well as a 41-hp diesel engine. The transmission takes place in all cases with a six-speed semi-automatic transmission.
Even a one-liter engine with and without turbo and five-speed drawer has been added. The ESP anti-skid system is standard in all versions. The body is dressed with plastic panels in interchangeable colors.
